A vitamin complex is a formulation that combines the essential vitamins – and sometimes minerals – the body needs to function, produce energy, repair itself and defend against illness, in a way that allows them to work together. Fast-paced, stressful lives, environmental factors and modern diets can sometimes leave people feeling persistently tired, run down or unfocused.

An IV vitamin complex delivers these nutrients directly into the bloodstream through a drip. It is used as a complementary well-being treatment; it does not replace a balanced diet, a healthy lifestyle or the investigation and treatment of medical conditions. Symptoms such as constant tiredness, frequent infections, hair loss or poor concentration can have many causes – such as iron deficiency, thyroid problems or vitamin B12 deficiency – which should be identified and treated appropriately. At our clinic in Beşiktaş, Istanbul, IV vitamin treatments are personalised after a medical assessment.

Why Might We Need Vitamin and Mineral Support?

Chronic stress keeps the body in “fight or flight” mode and can increase the use of certain nutrients; for example, the adrenal glands use B vitamins (especially B5) and vitamin C in producing the stress hormone cortisol. Intensive farming and long supply chains may reduce the vitamin content of some foods, and pollution and toxins place extra demands on the body’s antioxidant defences, which rely on nutrients such as vitamin C, vitamin E and selenium.

When needs increase and intake falls short, people may experience a “subclinical” shortfall that does not appear as a disease but can affect how they feel – tiredness that does not improve with sleep, catching every seasonal illness, difficulty focusing, brittle nails or a pale complexion. A balanced diet is always the foundation; IV vitamin support can be a complementary option for some people.

Vitamin Complex

The idea behind a vitamin complex is synergy. Vitamins and minerals work together like the instruments in an orchestra; a shortage of one can affect another – vitamin C helps iron absorption, and vitamins D and K help calcium reach the bones. A balanced complex is therefore often more useful than focusing on a single nutrient.

One of the best-known IV vitamin formulas is the “Myers’ cocktail”, named after Dr John Myers. It typically contains B vitamins (B1, B2, B3, B5, B6), vitamin C, magnesium and calcium. This basic formula can be personalised to individual needs – for example, more B5 and magnesium for someone dealing with fatigue and stress, or more vitamin C and zinc for someone wishing to support their immune system.

The Conductors: B Vitamins Working Together

B vitamins usually form the backbone of a vitamin complex. This group of eight water-soluble vitamins plays a key role in energy metabolism, helping convert carbohydrates, proteins and fats into ATP, the energy currency of our cells.

  • Vitamin B1 (thiamine): key to carbohydrate metabolism and to turning glucose – the main fuel of the brain and nerves – into energy.
  • Vitamin B2 (riboflavin): involved in cellular respiration and energy production, and helps recycle the antioxidant glutathione.
  • Vitamin B3 (niacin): needed by more than 50 enzymes; involved in DNA repair, energy production and cholesterol balance.
  • Vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid): sometimes called the “anti-stress vitamin”, important in producing stress hormones and red blood cells and in energy production.
  • Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine): involved in over 100 enzyme reactions, including the synthesis of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine and melatonin, and supports immune function.

B vitamins work best together; a high dose of a single one can upset the balance of the others, which is why a balanced complex matters.

Oral multivitamins are useful for daily support, but how much is absorbed depends on digestive health and the formulation. Giving vitamins intravenously delivers them directly into the circulation and allows certain nutrients, such as vitamin C, to be given in doses that would not be tolerated by mouth.

The process begins with an in-depth discussion of your lifestyle, stress, sleep, diet and specific complaints – such as persistent tiredness, recurrent infections, exam stress or slow recovery after exercise – together with your medical history, medications and, where needed, blood tests. IV vitamins are not suitable for everyone; for example, certain kidney or heart conditions and some metabolic disorders require caution. Based on this assessment, I design a formula suited to you rather than a one-size-fits-all mixture.

The infusion takes about 30–45 minutes in a comfortable setting, while you rest in a reclining chair. Many people find it a pleasant, restorative break, and some report feeling more energetic afterwards, though experiences vary from person to person.
