Hair mesotherapy is one of the most effective modern treatments for hair loss and hair health. The vitamins, minerals, amino acids and other nourishing ingredients the hair follicles need are delivered through micro-injections directly into the middle layer of the scalp (mesoderm). Stress, environmental factors and irregular eating habits, common in big cities such as Istanbul, can affect hair health, and hair mesotherapy offers a targeted treatment to revitalise and strengthen the hair and bring shedding under control.
It does not only aim to reduce shedding; it also improves the quality of existing hair for a shinier, livelier, fuller look. It should be performed by an experienced physician with cocktails prepared for each patient. Success depends on correct diagnosis, the right mixture and correct technique.
Basic Principles and Uses of Hair Mesotherapy
Hair mesotherapy is built on nourishing and revitalising the hair follicles. Many factors can trigger hair loss: modern lifestyle, genetics, hormonal changes, seasonal changes and vitamin deficiencies. When hair loses its vitality it becomes dull and thin, and eventually starts to fall. Unlike supplements taken by mouth or products applied to the hair, mesotherapy goes straight to the source – the follicles – so ingredients do not lose their effect on the way. Through fine needles, a rich cocktail of vitamins (especially B vitamins), minerals (zinc, selenium, copper), amino acids, growth factors and circulation-supporting agents is injected directly into the layer of skin where the follicles are. This speeds up local circulation, stimulates cell metabolism and reactivates weakened or dormant follicles.
At our clinic in Beşiktaş, Istanbul, a detailed hair and scalp analysis is done first to determine the type and severity of hair loss and its underlying causes. On this basis I prepare a fully personalised cocktail: the mixture for someone with androgenetic alopecia (male-pattern hair loss) will differ from that for stress-related or seasonal shedding.
The treatment takes about 20–30 minutes and is usually not painful; for sensitive patients an anaesthetic spray or cream can be used. Sessions are usually planned 1–2 weeks apart as a course of about 6–10 sessions. A visible reduction in shedding is often noticed from the first sessions; later, fine new hairs (“baby hairs”) begin to appear and existing hair becomes thicker, shinier and healthier. Maintenance sessions (for example every 3–6 months) may be recommended to preserve results. Hair mesotherapy can be used safely in both women and men; it is non-surgical, has minimal risk of side effects and needs no recovery time.
The Treatment Process: A Step-by-Step Guide
Consultation: I take your medical history, ask when the hair loss began and how it has progressed, and about family history and lifestyle. A hair and scalp analysis is then carried out with a device called a trichoscope, which shows the condition of the follicles, hair thickness, density and scalp circulation. This helps identify the underlying cause (for example hormonal, stress-related or nutritional) – the backbone of treatment, since the contents of the cocktail depend on it. It is also a chance for you to ask questions and form realistic expectations.
Sessions: the scalp is cleaned with an antiseptic solution. Although discomfort is minimal, an anaesthetic cream or spray can be applied about 20–30 minutes beforehand for those sensitive to needles. The personalised cocktail is then injected in micro-injections about 1–2 cm apart over the areas of thinning and the whole scalp. Correct depth and angle are critical for effectiveness. The whole scalp takes about 20–30 minutes, and you can return to daily life straight away with no special recovery.
Aftercare: for the first 12–24 hours, do not wash your hair and avoid very hot environments such as hammams and saunas, and intense exercise.
Schedule: sessions are repeated according to your hair’s needs – typically once a week in the first month, then every 15 days or monthly – with a course usually of 6 to 10 sessions. Patience is important: given the hair growth cycle, the final and most noticeable results usually appear within 3–6 months of completing the course, as shedding slows, existing hair revitalises and new, stronger hair grows.
The Science Behind Mesotherapy and Its Safety
Mesotherapy has been used for many years in aesthetic and medical dermatology. It dates back to 1952 and the French physician Michel Pistor, and is based on the principle of “a little, rarely and in the right place” – delivering active ingredients at high concentration directly to the problem area rather than letting them disperse through the bloodstream. For hair, this means delivering bioactive compounds that support growth directly to the layer where the follicles are. It works through two mechanisms:
Pharmacological effect: the contents of the cocktail. B vitamins (biotin, B5) play a key role in producing keratin, the building block of hair. Minerals such as zinc help keep follicles healthy; deficiency can contribute to hair loss. Amino acids are the building blocks of keratin. Growth factors such as copper peptides can help prolong the growth (anagen) phase. Hyaluronic acid hydrates the scalp for a healthier environment.
Physical stimulation: the very fine needles create controlled micro-injury, which the body repairs through its natural healing process: blood flow increases, growth factors are released and new collagen and elastin are produced. This enhances the effect of the injected ingredients and improves nourishment of weakened follicles.
Safety: performed by an experienced physician under sterile conditions with quality, approved products, hair mesotherapy is very safe. Single-use needles are used and the risk of infection is minimal. Side effects are usually mild and temporary – slight redness, small bruises or swelling at injection sites – and usually disappear within a few hours or a day or two. The risk of allergic reaction is low, as the ingredients are generally biocompatible or naturally present in the body, but your allergy history is always checked beforehand. Results vary between individuals.
