Polycaprolactone (PCL)
What Is Polycaprolactone (PCL)?
Polycaprolactone (PCL) is a biocompatible, biodegradable biostimulator molecule that both provides direct volume and creates long-term collagen stimulation.
When placed beneath the skin, PCL products create immediate tissue support and volume thanks to their gel carrier, while stimulating collagen production over time so that the effect continues biologically.
In this respect, PCL is considered a hybrid approach, offering both filler-like support and a biostimulating effect.
How Does PCL Work?
The effect of PCL is considered in two phases:
- Early phase:
The gel carrier creates immediate volume and support in the treated area. - Over time:
As the PCL microparticles break down slowly and in a controlled way:- Fibroblast activity increases
- New collagen synthesis is stimulated
- The tissue structure is biologically strengthened
While the carrier is gradually absorbed by the body, collagen stimulation turns the result into a longer-lasting and more natural structure.
What Makes the PCL Result Distinctive
The distinguishing features of PCL treatment are:
- Immediate volume and support after treatment
- Collagen stimulation that develops over time
- A biological structure that integrates with the tissue
- Results without hardness or artificial fullness
Thanks to these features, PCL is preferred both when volume is needed and when long-term improvement in tissue quality is the goal.
Where Is Polycaprolactone (PCL) Used?
PCL biostimulators have a wide range of uses on the face and body. The areas most often assessed are:
- Face (mid-face, lower face and jawline support areas)
- Temples
- Neck
- Décolletage
In some cases it may also be used for tissue support and firming on body areas such as:
- The back of the upper arms
- Above the knees
- Around the abdomen
How Is a PCL Treatment Planned?
- Skin structure, volume needs and collagen loss are assessed together
- The treatment areas and depth are determined
- Product choice and quantity are planned individually
- The treatment is often performed with a cannula
PCL treatment is planned with controlled techniques suited to facial and body anatomy.
When Do Results Appear?
With PCL:
- Immediate volume and support may be seen right after treatment
- Collagen synthesis begins within 1–2 months
- Improvements in tissue quality and firmness become more visible within 3–6 months
How long the effect lasts may vary depending on the treatment area, product type and individual factors.
Who Might It Suit?
After a medical assessment, PCL may be planned for people who:
- Have skin laxity together with volume loss
- Want longer-lasting support
- Want the combined effect of a filler and a biostimulator
- Are looking for natural yet noticeable tissue support
Natural Appearance and Patient Safety
The core approach of PCL treatment is to add volume to the tissue while respecting its biological structure.
The entire assessment and treatment process is carried out with facial and body anatomy in mind and with patient safety as the priority.
